On Friday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed a new feature for WhatsApp. He stated that users could now securely and conveniently transfer their chat history between devices.
For a successful transfer, both devices must operate on the same OS. The new feature simplifies and speeds up transferring messages and larger attachments between devices.
Meta CEO Zuckerberg posted on his official Facebook page, “If you want to move your WhatsApp chats to a new phone, you can now do it more privately without your chats ever leaving your devices.” With QR code authentication, users can share their chat history. He also shared a demonstration video explaining the new process.
Although WhatsApp previously let users migrate chat history between phones, the new QR code method makes the process safer.
Currently, users can move their chat history through third-party apps or cloud service backups.
With this new method, users can transfer data without exiting the app on one device. The data stays secure, exclusively between the two devices, without involving any third-party apps or cloud services.
Hence, users won’t need to back up data to transfer chat history or media files. For the QR code transfer, both devices must be connected to Wi-Fi with location-enabled. The transfer can be initiated by navigating to Settings > Chats > Chats Transfer on the old phone, then scanning the QR code with the new device.
