Google is introducing fresh generative AI capabilities to its Google Chrome browser. These additions are rolling out on Chrome for both Mac and Windows devices, and the company is gradually incorporating them with the latest Chrome release (M121).
Two recently introduced AI features are now part of the browser, and a third one is in the pipeline for next month. These features empower users to personalize Google Chrome themes and efficiently manage open tabs.
The forthcoming features will be introduced as part of the Experimental AI category. As early public experiments, they won’t be incorporated into enterprise and educational accounts.
Google revealed the new AI tools in a post, expressing their goal to enhance user efficiency and personalize the browsing experience through these features.
The latest features consist of a Tab Organizer, Custom Themes, and Writing Help. While currently available only in the US, there are plans to expand these features to other markets in the near future.
To activate these features, users can log into their Google account, click on Settings in the top-right three-dotted menu, and then go to the Experimental AI page. On this page, they will find an option to enable the AI features.
Tab Organizer
According to Google, this AI-driven functionality will autonomously form tab groups by assessing opened tabs, streamlining the browser organization for the user. It is designed for individuals who maintain a significant number of open tabs and seek to avoid the hassle of manual tab grouping.
To utilize this feature, users can follow these steps:
- Right-click on a tab and choose “Organize Similar Tabs.”
- Alternatively, click on the drop-down menu at the top left and select “Organize tabs” for manual grouping suggestions.
- Customize the suggested group by changing its name and emoji as desired.
Custom Themes
The custom themes functionality is based on the AI text-to-image diffusion model, previously introduced on Android 14 devices, beginning with the Google Pixel 8 series.
This feature enables users to create distinctive themes for the Google Chrome browser. The image generation process is seamless and doesn’t necessitate users to be skilled in prompt creation.
To use this feature:
- Click on the Customize Chrome side panel.
- Choose “Change theme.”
- Click on “Create with AI” option.
- Use the drop-down menu to select a theme.
- Explore two options to add stylistic details.
- Choose from various colors to create a unique theme.
- Click on “Create” to generate six images for selection.
Writing Help
The Writing Help feature serves as an AI-powered text-generation tool, akin to Google Bard, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google SGE (Search Generative Experience).
Google states that this AI writing assistant will assist users in composing reviews for establishments, RSVPing for events, or making inquiries on websites.
This functionality will be available through a text box on any website within Google Chrome.
Users can easily initiate it by right-clicking and selecting “Help Me Write,” leading to the opening of another text box. Upon entering a few words to express their thoughts, the tool will generate the corresponding text.
Users will be provided with options to modify the length and tone of the generated content.
